Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)
Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) therapy is the use of Naltrexone in small dosages to help regulate the immune system and thus help patients with various types of autoimmune system concerns. In higher dosages Natrexone is an opiate blocker that was historically used to help patients with opiate dependence. LDN has effectively no opiate blocking properties and is not used for these purposes.
The therapeutic use of LDN has been shown to help patients with autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. The dosage is typically between 1.5 to 4.5mg daily at bed. LDN is thought to stimulate the pituitary gland to increase production of endorphins, which may re-balance the immune system and thus reduce the activity of Hashimoto’s. It is also thought to work via a number of possible mechanisms to reduce inflammation, oxidative stress, and inflammatory cytokines.
Prior to prescribing LDN I always have a thorough consultation with a patient and review their individual health history and circumstances. During this process we may decide to order testing to further diagnose and qualify potential treatments like LDN.
