Hyaluronic Acid (HA) injections like Durolane, Synvisc, and Cingal are designed to help replace or supplement the joint fluid that has been worn down during the progression towards osteoarthritis. A healthy joint contains healthy synovial fluid, which lubricates and provides shock absorption inside the joint. Healthy joints should have healthy functioning cartilage and bone. An unhealthy joint that contains osteoarthritis will have some degree of loss of synovial fluid, eroded cartilage, and often bone spur or osteophyte formation.

Hyaluronic acid is an important component of synovial fluid, which provides lubrication and buffering between bones to reduce or prevent osteoarthritis damage inside the joint. Durolane, Synvisc, and Cingal are HA injection products approved for use in Canada for osteoarthritis of the hips, knees, ankles, fingers, or toes. Many clinical studies exist on these products to show they can be effective at supporting joint function and can provide pain relief.

One of my favourite parts of working with osteoarthritis and HA products is the devising of a treatment plan for the patient. Each person presents with a different history, has different degree of OA, and has different goals. HA injections are often done 1-2 times per year to help not only improve joint lubrication and decrease pain but also to reduce the risk of further wear and tear over time. HA injections are often part of a larger strategy for joint health that may also include PRP injections, prolotherapy injections, and physiotherapy exercises.
