Dr. Brent Barlow, ND Introduction
Dr. Barlow graduated from the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster, BC in June 2009. He recently started his practice in the beautiful city of Kelowna in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. Dr. Barlow is in general practice and has special interests in pain management and functional medicine.

Where did Dr. Barlow grow up?
Dr. Barlow was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario by his parents Tom and Marg and with his brother Darren. He has an athletic background and played on several sports teams in his childhood and high school years. He played football, hockey, baseball, badminton, touch football and golf during high school and was voted Athlete of the Year in 1997 at Barton Secondary School. He also played 3 seasons of varsity football for the University of Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.

Dr. Barlow graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in August of 2001 with an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration and a minor in geography. After graduating from Wilfrid Laurier, Dr. Barlow moved to Invermere, BC to work in the ski industry at Panorama Mountain Village. This is where he met and fell for his future wife Sara. Brent and Sara were married in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova Scotia in August of 2006.

How did Dr. Barlow become interested in Naturopathic Medicine?
Dr. Barlow became passionate about health, wellness, longevity, and athletic performance while playing varsity football. He wanted to pursue athletic performance without sacrificing long-term health. He realized that this was the area he would like to make his career. However, he was unsure of how or what career path to pursue.

After taking some nutrition courses he eventually found out about naturopathic medicine. He visited several naturopathic doctors to learn more about the profession and was amazed by the services they provided and the results they were getting. He immediately contacted the accredited schools in North America, went back to school to acquire the prerequisite courses, and applied for admissions. Dr. Barlow was accepted by the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine, his first choice, in the spring of 2005.

Where did Dr. Barlow graduate from?
Dr. Barlow graduated from the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster, BC, in June, 2009. BINM is the only Naturopathic Medical School in Western Canada and is well known for it's cutting edge curriculum, intimate class sizes, and strength in physical medicine techniques. During the 4 year duration of naturopathic medical school Dr. Barlow and his wife lived in New Westminster, BC. Dr. Barlow volunteered on several committees while at BINM and was the clinic rep for his class. Dr. Barlow was voted co-valedictorian in his graduating class and was privileged to speak at the graduation ceremony.

What special areas does Dr. Barlow focus on?
Dr. Barlow focused on physical medicine, pain management, and functional medicine as areas of special interest during naturopathic medical school. He did extra training and courses in prolotherapy, neural therapy, Bowen therapy, IV therapies, and chelation therapy in order to provide the best level of care to patients who could benefit from these treatments.

Dr. Barlow completed a nine month externship program with Dr. Albert Kim, ND, one of the leaders in the naturopathic community with prolotherapy and pain management medicine. Dr. Kim practices in Burnaby, BC and continues to be a mentor to Dr. Barlow.

What other projects is Dr. Barlow involved in?

Naturopathic Radio
In 2007, Dr. Barlow co-founded an internet radio program called Naturopathic Radio. This is a weekly radio program that focuses on the latest news and information about natural medicine, health, and wellness. Dr. Barlow has been the host of the show since its inception and is actively expanding the Naturopathic Radio Network to include more programming from the other naturopathic medical schools and doctors.

Curriculum Development at BINM
Dr. Barlow is working with the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine to improve the curriculum for practice management and development. He is working in conjunction with Naturopathic Radio to provide each student at BINM with their own website, newsletter articles, and radio shows.

Book - to be released in 2010
Dr. Barlow and Dr. Albert Kim, ND are co-writing a book specifically designed to transform and improve the lives of people with pain management and weight management issues. The book is scheduled to be released in early 2010.

Why did Dr. Barlow choose Kelowna?
Dr. Barlow and his wife moved to Kelowna in September of 2009. They chose to live in Kelowna because it is a beautiful small city that combines most of the comforts larger cities provide, is very close to nature, and has a wonderful and energetic vibe. They look forward to a fulfilling life in Kelowna.
